Oya Baydar was born in 1940 in Istanbul. After studying sociology at university, she was imprisoned in 1971 because of her opposition to the military putsch. In 1980 she went into exile in Germany. In 1991 she came back to Turkey. Oya Baydar’s short stories and novels placed her among the most eminent writers in Turkey and beyond. She won several prices such as the Sait Faik Price in 1991 for Elveda Alyoşa (Farewell Alyosha) and the Orhan Kemal Price for Sıcak Külleri Kaldı (Only Ashes Left) in 2001.
