Olga Tokarczuk (born in 1962) is one of the most widely recognized and successful Polish writers living today. She studied clinical psychology at the University of Warsaw and went on to work as a therapist. Her debut novel, The Journey of the Book-People (1993), gained the recognition of public and critics. Her third novel, Primeval and Other Times (1996), is one of her most successful books to date and was translated, like most of her works, into numerous languages. Aside from novels she also writes short stories and essays. Olga Tokarczuk has been awarded several Polish and international literary prizes. In 2008 she won one of Poland’s most prestigious literary prizes, the Nike Award.
