Born in 1946 in Algarve, Portugal. She published her first novel O dias dos Prodigios ( the DAy of the Prodigies) in 1980 but it was Costa dos Murmurios( The murmuring coast, 1988), a book that draws upon her experiences in colonial Africa, that made her one of the most important writer in comtemporary Portugese fiction.
